“Only the few know the sweetness of the twisted apples.” And even the ones that believe their own lives are meaningless have hope for others. All of the characters are at least searching. In that honesty, you might even find optimism. It would be easy to dismiss it as too dark, but you could also say it is merely honest or realistic. Where Main Street skewers the hypocrisy of the social order of Gopher Prairie, Winesburg shows pity and compassion for the residents (of every social position.they all have problems). It is not as funny, but neither is it as cynical. There are many comparisons to Sinclair Lewis’ Main Street-which I loved-because the setting and plot (to the extent there is one) are similar. I have read a number of reviews and find myself agreeing with both those that loved it and those that hated it (…far fewer I might point out). This review might be a bit choppy, but so was the book.
